Scholastic book orders went home August 30th(Monday) and are due on Sept. 10th(Friday).  The kids are extremely excited about the books in the catalog and some are as cheap as $1!  A parent letter is attached to the order form giving you instructions on how to order online.  It's fast and easy and best of all our class gets $3 towards books for the class for each order placed online!  You can still place an order using the order form and send it in with a check or money order if you prefer.  You can access the site by going to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs

  Reader's Workshop

In Reader's Workshop this week we will be continuing with Rituals and Routines.  Student's are setting goals for Reading Bingo and we will be going over the different ways to respond after completing a book.  Please check your child's Reading Log as well as their Reading Bingo card to help keep track of their reading.  Students need to read at least 6 books this marking period in order to meet the standard.
Chets Creek 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are participating in a reading competition called Battle of the Books. The purpose of the Battle of the Books is to encourage students to read quality literature, promote critical thinking, and to enhance book discussions!  These high-interest books are part of the Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award Program and are included in our classroom and school library.  Many students already selected one of the books, and we are currently reading one together called Masterpiece. Ask your child what is going on with James and Marvin!
Starting soon, students may take comprehension tests to measure their knowledge of the individual Battle books.  If students pass the tests, they will receive credit on their Reading Bingo cards, which go toward their reading goals each nine weeks.  Additionally, the students who read and pass the most tests will also be eligible to be on our own Battle Teams that will compete against other classes.

Please check out the link blow to read a description of each of the 15 titles for this year's Battle of the Books.
Reading Homework - read for 20 - 30 minutes and log it in the Reading Log

 Language and Vocabulary

We will not be working on Language and Vocabulary this week due to Benchmark testing.

For a student to earn the "Readers for Leaders" title for the year, the individual student must read a combined total of 25 books by the end of the 4th 9 weeks.

Parents Corner
Thank you to everyone who has joined PTA!  It is $5 to join if you haven't already.  Please help support PTA :)  A subsciption to Weekly Reader is $5.  This is a valuable tool for our classroom.  This subscription contains interesting and informative articles and the kids love it!  Thank you to parents who have sent in extra money to cover the cost of a subscription for a student who might not be able to afford it!

The website and student planner are my most valued tools for communication.  Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
Thanks again for all your support.
